A quick mention of today's game.
Started off a nightmare, ref pulled out late last night and despite me knocking on referee's doors this morning, we had to start without one. (Kelvin did well to get there and arrived 10 minutes into the game)
Had another nightmare as I arrived at Common Edge with no netting. (was on cruise control as used to playing on Collins Park).
Anyway the game.
Very difficult first team selection ended up leaving Matty Muscroft on the bench for the first half. Matty would normally be a definite starter, but he has not been available of late and I decided to start with the lads that have been turning out week in, week out.
So the team:
Howard, Huckerby, Walker, Clews, Graham, Watt, Hunt, Clarke, Waters, Hill and Casson.
Gale force conditions on 'The Edge' did not help the game, but we got off to quite a good start with the wind at our backs.
Clarky played Hilly in on goal and the 36-year-old wonder kid chipped the keeper from just inside the box.
Was quite an even first half, although we had a couple of very good chances. On another day we could have gone in 3 up at the break.
Half time we made the change, with Adrian coming off for Mussy.
The wind seemed stronger as we played against it and as expected Clarence threw everything at us.
They eventually got the breakthrough when Kenny was tripped just inside the box and Gav Hughes converted the penalty to make it 1-1.
Despite Clarence having around 30 (off target) shots, we held strong and battled well.
We could have had a winner late on when Scott had a great chance, but I think if we had nicked it, it would have been slightly unfair.
1-1 it ended, fair result on the day with both teams being on top with the wind at their backs.
Clarence are a much improved team on last season and have some good players. They should be there or there about at the end of the season.
We got our season back on track I think today. We have been poor in parts before Xmas, but hopefully this can be the start of a much more solid 2007. If we can get today's squad out every week, and unleash the Horse back into play, we will do ourselves more justice than we have so far.
Up the Arcaders
ps: I am not sure if it was because we were playing the Clarence, but the spread of food was huge today back at the pub. Clarky's mum is without doubt favourite for Player of the Year as it stands.
